Antonis Kentonis (b.2001, Cyprus)
I identify as a transdisciplinary visual artist as I see no distinction between my academic and creative work. I developed a passion for history and culture very early in my life and became fascinated with collecting objects. Not only because of their materials but also the stories they carry.
Since both aspects of my life are intrinsically connected with my practice, they cannot be contextually separated. My work springs forth from the in-depth research I undertake on specific artefacts, cultures, historic events and the relationships between them. As a result, my subject matter tends to shift in accordance with my current research interests. However, themes of intersectionality, cultural erasure, collections, historic trade, and cross-cultural exchange keep recurring in my work. Similarly, the manner of my art also changes with each thematic work, although all my works are characterised by my keen eye for detail, use of sharp colours, and patterns.Working primarily with the medium of watercolour, I also deal with drawing, printmaking, and sculpture among others. Most of my works are small and portable, as I want the viewer to approach and personally encounter my art. To be fully experienced, one should ideally handle and tangibly examine my work. Through this, I hope to ignite curiosity in my audience, thus encouraging a thirst for inquiry, cultural literacy and understanding. For this reason, aesthetics and the element of ambiguity are fundamental rules that I adhere to when creating. I don’t like giving clear readings of my art, due to my aversion to didacticism. I prefer allowing the pieces to act as starting points for conversations, examining our past and how it reflects our present. After completing my studies in Fine Art Painting from University of the Arts London, Camberwell with a first, I have been successfully admitted to study at School of Oriental and African Studies for a masters in Art History and Archeology.
